In a way video tapes were faster than a DVD and in others slower. I used Beta same as 90% of the TV stations in the US at the time. Beta never caught on because of price and Sony's lack of licensing it until it was too late. AND Typewriters ruled!
My husband's family had a video disc system that predated DVDs. The discs were about the size of LPs. I don't remember much more about them (he's the tech person in the family, not me), but I did think it was funny when VHS, which beat out Beta and the early discs, was replaced by DVDs.
